Virgen de Coromoto: The Miraculous Patroness and Protector of Venezuela

Our Lady of Coromoto, also known as the Virgin of Coromoto, is one of Venezuela’s most cherished and revered religious figures, celebrated with deep devotion every September. Declared the Patroness of Venezuela in 1942, Virgen de Coromoto: The Miraculous Patroness and Protector of Venezuela, stands as a beacon of faith and hope for millions of Venezuelans and Catholics worldwide

Her story dates back to the 17th century, when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the chief of the Coromoto tribe, urging him and his people to embrace Christianity. When the city of Guanare was founded in 1591, the local Cospes tribe fled to the jungle to escape the Catholic Church’s efforts to evangelize them. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared twice to the tribe’s chief—first in 1651, telling him to be baptized, and again on September 8, 1652, when she appeared in his hut. As the chief resisted once more and attempted to seize her, she vanished, leaving behind a small painting of herself. This miraculous image prompted the chief to finally convert.

Today, that sacred relic is enshrined in the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Coromoto in Guanare, where pilgrims gather to seek her intercession for peace, health, and guidance. Believers view La Virgen de la Coromoto as a source of spiritual protection, particularly during times of hardship. Many turn to her in moments of personal struggle, looking for strength and comfort in matters of family, health, and faith.

Her image, often depicted with a crown and the infant Jesus in her arms, serves as a powerful symbol of maternal love and care for all who seek her help. As we approach her feast day in September, it is a time for reflection and prayer.
