Our Lady of Coromoto is the patroness of Venezuela and one of the most venerated images of the Virgin Mary in Latin America. According to tradition, in 1652, the chief of the indigenous tribe of the Coromoto region encountered a vision of the Virgin Mary, who asked him to be baptized along with his entire tribe. The chief, however, initially refused and the vision reappeared twice more, urging him to accept the faith. Finally, after the third apparition, the chief agreed, and he and his tribe were baptized by a Spanish missionary.
The vision of the Virgin Mary was said to have left behind a small copper-colored image of herself on a leaf, which was taken to a nearby chapel and venerated. Over time, the image became associated with numerous miracles and was declared the official patroness of Venezuela by Pope Pius XII in 1944.
Today, the image of Our Lady of Coromoto is displayed in the National Shrine of Our Lady of Coromoto in Guanare, Venezuela, and is celebrated every year on September 8th, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
